It’s back! The 2023 Toronto School Scrabble Championship will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2023 from 9:30am-2:30pm at St. Pius X Catholic School (map).
This school is close to Jane subway station of the TTC. Parking at the school is unlikely due to limited space, but street/paid parking lots are available nearby.

Format

The events will have a similar format to tournaments from previous years with the emphasis on friendly rivalry. There will be a variety of prizes for being a good sport, theme words, and participation. As this is the first year of our return to play, we will not be holding separate qualifiers and finals. Plans are underway for a separate tournament in Peel region in the spring, so schools further west may wish to wait for that announcement.

Divisions are arranged by grades: 4 (Junior), 5-6 (Mid-low), 7-8 (Mid-high), 9-12 (Senior)
Grade fours will play with other grade fours in a Junior tournament. The tournament organizers reserve the right to make any format change and will do so based on the volume of registration at each level.

Game equipment will be provided. You can find docs on how to play on our website. Your players should have been playing a little bit prior to the tournament as we do not have the capacity to teach them the basic rules during the event, but do not let that discourage you from participating as we strive to make it inclusive and fun for all.

There is a maximum of 10 pairs per school, but you may request to send more than that by emailing info@schoolscrabble.ca. If you have a player that lacks a partner, let us know and we may be able to arrange a partner from another school. If players require any specific accommodations to make it more accessible, please let us know.

We are pleased to announce the 2023 Toronto-area School Scrabble Championship will be held on Thursday, February 23rd at St. Pius X Catholic School [map].

Given this is the first event in several years, we are taking a phased approach and for the moment this is the only event planned. Details about the format and schedule will follow and registration will open in January. In the meantime, email us and let us know if you expect your school to participate.

School Scrabble Canada’s administration is currently reviewing the prospects of returning to play and hosting tournaments in 2022. Input from teachers and students is appreciated via email. More updates will be provided before the end of 2021.

In order to play a game of SCRABBLE®, players must agree to a dictionary in order to adjudicate any challenges that may occur. How do you know if a word is really a word? It depends on your lexicon!

Official SCRABBLE® Players Dictionary (OSPD)

The Official SCRABBLE® Players Dictionary is for household play. Published by Merriam-Webster, this lexicon is considered family-friendly as many words deemed offensive have been omitted. It is currently in its fifth edition and is sold in most major bookstores. Words printed in this dictionary go up to eight letters in length.

Official Tournament and Club Word List (OWL/TWL)

The Official Tournament and Club Word List is the primary lexicon used in Canada, the United States and Thailand. This is one of the lexica used at the Mississauga SCRABBLE® Club. It is based on OSPD, but contains more words than OSPD because it includes offensive words, some trademarked terms (e.g. “KLEENEX”) and words longer than eight letters. Last updated in 2014, OWL consists of 187632 words. As it is strictly a list, it typically does not contain definitions.

School SCRABBLE® Word List (OWL/TWL)

The School SCRABBLE® Word List is the primary lexicon used for school play in North America. It is similar to OWL, but does not include words deemed offensive.

Collins SCRABBLE® Words (CSW)

Collins SCRABBLE® Words, also known as Collins and formerly SOWPODS, is the primary official lexicon used in most of the world outside North America. Thus, it is used in major international tournaments such as the World SCRABBLE® Championship. Many tournaments in North America offer Collins divisions in addition to OWL divisions. Last updated in 2015, Collins consists of 267751 words, approximately 80000 more words than OWL. This is one of the lexica used at the Mississauga SCRABBLE® Club.

Peel School Scrabble 2017 Guidelines

Breakdown

Format

In all events, students play in pairs. Game equipment is provided. All students are asked to bring pen/pencils for scorekeeping. Games are limited to 25 minutes per team (50 minutes total) and a SCRABBLE® clock is used. Both teams keep track of the score and verify the score throughout the game. At the end of a game, students report who won and the scores. For consecutive rounds, players are matched against players with similar records. A number of the top pairs in grades 5-8 will be invited to the Toronto-area City Finals on March 23rd.

Registration

The entry fee for each player is $5. Schools may register up to 8 players (4 pairs). Prior to the event, we will email a notice if space is still available for additional students.

• Names of students (indicate the pairs)
• Grade of every student
• Payment method (cash at door or cheque, indicate if receipt is requested)

A registration confirmation will be emailed to you upon receipt of your registration info. Rosters, including the exact grades and names of student pairs, must be submitted by February 28th 2017, so that we can arrange the matches.
